WINCan‘s goal is to prepare Canada’s workforce for the future of work. \n\n\n\n📅 Wednesday\, May 29th \n\n\n\n⏲ 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM \n\n\n\n📍 University of Windsor\, Dillon Hall\, Room 255

SUMMARY:Undoing Ableism as Praxis of Disability Pride
DESCRIPTION:📍 Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario (ALSO) (1100 University Ave\, W.)👥 In-Person Only \n\n\n\nThis event is being held as part of Hackforge’s Accessibility Series\, coinciding with National AccessAbility Week (May 26 – June 1) \n\n\n\nAn interactive workshop for students\, professionals\, and community members seeking to create accessible spaces for people with disabilities\, and anyone affected by ableism. \n\n\n\nFaced with the burden of successfully reproducing norms that align with a dominant culture\, language\, religion\, appearance\, age\, health\, general ways of being\, navigating\, and learning –– or otherwise being subjected to judgement or exclusion\, this workshop employs experiential learning strategies to explore the forces and lived consequences of ableism. In a world sustained on deeply entrenched norms of somatic and neurological ideals of mental and physical strength\, this interactive session underscores ableism as a source of oppression for disabled folks. \n\n\n\nThroughout the workshop\, participants are asked to examine how the microstructures of language and macro-interactions with social\, medical\, and institutional practices and policy reinforce ableist tendencies that value able-bodiedness as the desired ideal. \n\n\n\nParticipants will reflect on their own interactions with ableism and develop the skill to dislodge commonly held ableist beliefs. Demonstrating lived experiences of ableism as having biological\, social\, and mental health effects\, participants will learn how to: \n\n\n\n\nBuild an environment that acknowledges the challenges of initiating difficult conversations addressing forms of exclusion and oppression\n\n\n\nRecognize ableism as a system of barriers in everyday life contexts\n\n\n\nApply practical strategies of undoing ableism as praxis (informed and committed action) of disability pride\n\n\n\n\nPerhaps most notably\, this workshop demonstrates that\, “you don’t have to be disabled to experience ableism.” – Talila Lewis \n\n\n\nThis workshop is delivered by Evelina Baczewska\, a feminist sociologist\, specializing in disability pride/disability justice. \n\n\n\n📅 Thursday\, May 30th \n\n\n\n⏲ 6 – 8PM \n\n\n\n📍 Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario (ALSO) (1100 University Ave\, W.) \n\n\n\nCost: Free \n\n\n\nIn-Person Only \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHackforge’s Accessibility Series is made possible with the support of Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario

SUMMARY:Exploring Peer Mentorship
DESCRIPTION:📍 Hackforge HQ (300 Ouellette Ave\, Unit 210)👥 In Person Only💲 Free \n\n\n\nHackforge’s goal has always been to create connections through\, with\, and over technology. This has resulted in a diverse group of individuals engaging with our programs\, staff\, and speakers – which we love! It has also helped us to see trends in the types of questions we’re asked and the stories we hear\, which has lead to our newest undertaking: peer mentorship groups. \n\n\n\nThere are common threads in the Hackforge community that surpass technology. We have folks in similar life stages\, people who have the same goals\, and those who share a similar background. We see a lot of opportunities for connections based on these commonalities\, and want to help you all establish them. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, August 31st from 11 AM to 1 PM we’re holding our first exploratory session on this topic. We’ll share ideas for how we believe job seekers can support each other\, and ways that established Windsorites can introduce transplants to the culture of our area\, but we also want to hear your ideas. What kind of group would you like to be a part of? How would you like to engage with others? \n\n\n\nYou should attend this event if you’re: \n\n\n\n\na student\n\n\n\na job seeker\n\n\n\nan established professional\n\n\n\na long-time local resident\n\n\n\na new local resident\n\n\n\ninterested in contributing to a welcoming\, supportive community\n\n\n\n\nPlease make plans to join us on Saturday\, August 31st for this casual\, conversational session. \n\n\n\n📅Saturday\, August 31st \n\n\n\n⌚ 11 AM – 1 PM \n\n\n\nRegister to attend In-Person in the RSVP box below
