DESCRIPTION:📍 Hackforge HQ (300 Ouellette Ave\, Unit 210)💻👥 In Person Only💲 Free \n\n\n\nWhen someone is unable to enter data directly into OpenStreetMap\, they have the option to offer the information as a “Note.” Notes might be business information\, details about road surface quality\, or pointing out an error in the data. These geo-tagged text strings offer an account-free\, low-barrier-of-entry method for people to contribute to OSM. \n\n\n\nNotes make their way into OSM through a few methods. Certain projects – like onosm.org – focus entirely on sharing info to OSM as notes. OSM.org allows users to enter notes directly through the web-browser – no need to even open iD! Numerous mobile apps also offer notes as a form of data entry\, as some data is just too finnicky to enter via mobile. \n\n\n\nHowever they all got there\, Windsor and Essex County currently feature somewhere around 40 open notes. So this month we’re going to work on cleaning those up! Some of these notes are relatively new\, while others have been sitting around for a while. We’ll gather in-person at Windsor Hackforge from 6 – 8 PM on Tuesday\, November 11th to take care of as many as we can. Join OpenStreetMap Windsor-Essex on Tuesday\, August 5th for a hands-on learning opportunity that will add pathway and landscape changes for the Legacy Beacon to OSM. Attendees will learn how to collect geodata and how to contribute to OSM. All levels of experience and technical acumen are welcome! \n\n\n\nThis event will take place in TWO PARTS. Join for one or both! \n\n\n\nPart I:\n\n\n\nLocation: Legacy Beacon (780 Riverside Dr W)Time: 5:30 – 6:30 PMActivity: Record GPX traces of the area\, noting the location of paths and other amenities. Bring your data-enabled mobile device with a GPS recording app installed (E.g. GPS Logger for Android\, myTracks on iOS). Alternatively\, you can go the low-tech route and bring a notebook and pen! Both methods will allow you to collect data that can later be added to OSM. Once everyone is on-site\, and before we start data collection\, the group will coordinate who is recording what data. This will help to make sure we have complete coverage\, and that everyone’s work will be included in the final changes. \n\n\n\nWalk back to Hackforge HQ (300 Ouellette Ave\, Unit 210). This is a walk of roughly 1km that takes about 15 minutes. \n\n\n\nPart II:\n\n\n\nLocation: Hackforge HQ (300 Ouellette Ave\, unit 210)Time: 7 – 8:30 PMActivity: Transferring collected data to OpenStreetMap. Using desktop and browser tools such as JOSM and iD Editor\, we’ll learn how to turn our GPX files and handwritten notes into OSM-compatible data. Attendees can bring in their own laptop for this part\, or they can use one of Hackforge’s house machines. \n\n\n\nRecommendation! This might mean adding missing attributes such as sidewalks\, or putting in new ones like the Victoria Ave and Pelissier St bike lanes. We might also get into discussions relating to data import\, the state of Windsor’s Open Data Portal\, and Hackforge’s recent cycling app update. \n\n\n\nUsers of all experience levels and using all editing platforms are welcome to attend. SUMMARY:WindsorEssexCycling V2 Launch
DESCRIPTION:📍 Hackforge HQ (300 Ouellette AVe\, Unit 210) and Online via Zoom 💻👥 Hybrid💲 Free \n\n\n\nIn 2022 Windsor Hackforge began an initiative to connect the local tech and cycling communities. In partnership with The City of Windsor\, The County Wide Active Transportation System (CWATS)\, and Parallel 42 Systems\, we launched a beta version of WindsorEssexCycling.ca. This free to use\, no account required web app offered cycling routes that took into consideration road conditions such as speed limit\, surface quality\, bike lane presence\, and general traffic levels. \n\n\n\nBuilt by community members\, this version served as a proof-of-concept\, and gave users something to test and provide feedback on. \n\n\n\nWith that feedback and contributions from even more community members\, we’ve developed WindsorEssexCycling.ca Version 2. \n\n\n\nUsing the same principles as the original\, V2 offers a better UI as well as turn-by-turn directions. Routing improvements are a never-ending endeavour\, with updates coming through as our OpenStreetMap team incrementally improves the underlying data. \n\n\n\nOn Thursday\, September 19th we’re celebrating the official launch of WindsorEssexCycling.ca V2 with an event at our HQ in Downtown Windsor\, and online via Zoom. Developer Haley Tibbits will be on hand to discuss some of her work\, and members of our OSM team will be present to talk about routing. It has been used to create the McDougall Street Corridor and Queer Walk walking tours. \n\n\n\nOver the past three months\, Hackforge’s developer advocate intern Haley Tibbits has been working on improving the Pytheas codebase. Her goal was to make the system more user-friendly\, including cleaner packages and comprehensive documentation. DESCRIPTION:📍Hackforge HQ (300 Ouellette Ave\, Unit 210)👥 In-Person Only \n\n\n\nActive transportation infrastructure includes sidewalks\, bike lanes\, and multi-use paths. Basically\, anything that improves people’s ability to move about their environment using human-powered forms of travel – think bikes\, rollerblades\, canoes\, and wheelchairs. \n\n\n\nOSM Windsor-Essex wants to explore where this infrastructure already exists in the region\, and then daydream about the possibilities for improving it! We’ll start by gathering attendee input on where existing infrastructure is currently missing from the dataset\, and will then create a map that shows where we would like to see additions and improvements. The Wishlist Map will then be made available on the Hackforge website.
