SUMMARY:Government of Canada Accessible & Equitable AI Standard: Group Review
DESCRIPTION:📍Zoom💻Virtual Only💲 Free \n\n\n\nAccessibility Standards Canada (ASC) develops national accessibility standards to help build a barrier-free Canada — by and for people with disabilities. As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly evolves\, ASC is working to ensure accessibility and equity are built into these emerging technologies. \n\n\n\nIn May 2024\, ASC released a technical guide on accessible and equitable AI\, and a draft standard is now available for public review. The final standard is expected to be published in winter 2026. While these standards will be mandatory for federally regulated organizations (like banks\, air travel\, and Canada Post)\, all AI developers can benefit from aligning their work with them. \n\n\n\nAt Hackforge\, we’re curious: How can we assess the accessibility of AI systems? And more importantly\, how can we ensure the systems we build are equitable and inclusive? We’re diving into the documents to find out — and we’d love for you to join us. \n\n\n\nOn Thursday\, May 29 from 3:30 to 5 PM EDT\, join Saamer Mansoor\, creator of BeAware Deaf Assistant\, for an overview of the draft standard and a discussion on what it means for developers. Come to explore highlights of the standard\, ask questions\, and take part in conversations at the intersection of artificial intelligence\, accessibility\, and equity. \n\n\n\nThis session leads into Friday’s event\, where Dr. Jutta Treviranus — chair of the Technical Committee on Accessible and Equitable AI Systems — will offer a free online talk for the Hackforge community. \n\n\n\n📆 Thursday\, May 29th🕦 3:30 – 5PM📍 Virtual – Register via Zoom

SUMMARY:Undoing Ableism as Praxis of Disability Pride
DESCRIPTION:📍 Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario (ALSO) (1100 University Ave\, W.)👥 In-Person Only \n\n\n\nThis event is being held as part of Hackforge’s Accessibility Series\, coinciding with National AccessAbility Week (May 26 – June 1) \n\n\n\nAn interactive workshop for students\, professionals\, and community members seeking to create accessible spaces for people with disabilities\, and anyone affected by ableism. \n\n\n\nFaced with the burden of successfully reproducing norms that align with a dominant culture\, language\, religion\, appearance\, age\, health\, general ways of being\, navigating\, and learning –– or otherwise being subjected to judgement or exclusion\, this workshop employs experiential learning strategies to explore the forces and lived consequences of ableism. In a world sustained on deeply entrenched norms of somatic and neurological ideals of mental and physical strength\, this interactive session underscores ableism as a source of oppression for disabled folks. \n\n\n\nThroughout the workshop\, participants are asked to examine how the microstructures of language and macro-interactions with social\, medical\, and institutional practices and policy reinforce ableist tendencies that value able-bodiedness as the desired ideal. \n\n\n\nParticipants will reflect on their own interactions with ableism and develop the skill to dislodge commonly held ableist beliefs. Demonstrating lived experiences of ableism as having biological\, social\, and mental health effects\, participants will learn how to: \n\n\n\n\nBuild an environment that acknowledges the challenges of initiating difficult conversations addressing forms of exclusion and oppression\n\n\n\nRecognize ableism as a system of barriers in everyday life contexts\n\n\n\nApply practical strategies of undoing ableism as praxis (informed and committed action) of disability pride\n\n\n\n\nPerhaps most notably\, this workshop demonstrates that\, “you don’t have to be disabled to experience ableism.” – Talila Lewis \n\n\n\nThis workshop is delivered by Evelina Baczewska\, a feminist sociologist\, specializing in disability pride/disability justice. \n\n\n\n📅 Thursday\, May 30th \n\n\n\n⏲ 6 – 8PM \n\n\n\n📍 Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario (ALSO) (1100 University Ave\, W.) \n\n\n\nCost: Free \n\n\n\nIn-Person Only \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHackforge’s Accessibility Series is made possible with the support of Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario

SUMMARY:Disability Inclusion: From Possibilities to Practice
DESCRIPTION:📍 Assisted Living Southwestern Ontario (ALSO) (1100 University Ave. W\, Windsor)👥💻 Hybrid \n\n\n\nThis event is being held as part of Hackforge’s Accessibility Series\, coinciding with Global Accessibility Awareness Day (May 16) and National AccessAbility Week (May 26 – June 1). \n\n\n\nThe third Thursday of each May is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). The purpose of GAAD is to get people to share lived experiences and innovative ideas about digital access and inclusion. \n\n\n\nIn this session we will learn about the Ontario open for business economic growth strategy that requires all Ontario organizations to implement the four core principles of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The AODA was passed into law in 2005 with the goal of full inclusion by 2025. The purpose of AODA is to create a more inclusive province\, that can attract more economic growth by removing as many barriers as possible\, making Ontario open for everyone. \n\n\n\nPresenter David Best will dig into how the AODA can help your business reach larger markets. He’ll cover the four value proposition principles that can help your business attract customers and stand out in the market: \n\n\n\nDignity: From information to knowledge (Knowledge is power) \n\n\n\nIndependence: From accessibility to usability (Usability is enabling) \n\n\n\nIntegration: From passive to active (Active is inclusive) \n\n\n\nEquality: From chaos to stability (Stability is satisfaction) \n\n\n\nDavid Best of BEST Accessibility Consulting is an Accessibility Information Technology Specialist with over 35 years of experience in the industry. He has worked for Air Canada\, and recently retired from IBM.
