Promotional banner for Hackforge’s “Neighbourhood Quest” event. The background is a pixel-art style illustration of Windsor’s downtown skyline, with buildings, the Detroit River, and the Ambassador Bridge. At the top right, bold red text reads “Neighbourhood Quest.” The center features the Hackforge logo above a text box with details: “Learn to Turn Local Maps and Stats into Text-based Games.” Below, icons with event information list the date (Oct. 24), time (6–8 PM), and location (Hybrid: Hackforge HQ & Zoom). The design is playful and game-inspired, reflecting the theme of interactive storytelling with local maps.

Forget the Oregon Trail, in this workshop, Doug Sartori (Parallel 42; Mean, Median, and Moose) will show you how to turn Census and OpenStreetMap data into a text-based adventure game set in your own neighbourhood!

With QGIS and open data as your toolkit, you’ll learn how to mash up maps, stats, and storytelling into a ridiculous, one-of-a-kind game that’s uniquely yours.

No experience required, just bring your curiosity (and maybe a wizard hat). Follow along, and by the end, you’ll walk away with a playable game and the skills to keep exploring the wild world of data-driven adventures.
